More than a headline speed
A fast connection can still feel slow when latency jumps under load. This test measures throughput in both directions, idle ping, jitter, and responsiveness while downloading. It then translates those numbers into practical guidance for streaming, video calls, gaming, and cloud work.
How the measurement works
Your browser downloads and uploads temporary blocks of data to Cloudflare's nearby edge network. The transfer size and elapsed time produce an estimate in megabits per second. Several small requests estimate round-trip latency and variation. Results can change with Wi-Fi signal, VPNs, browser load, congestion, device power saving, and the chosen test server.
Getting a reliable result
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and streaming on other devices.
- Run two or three tests at different times instead of relying on one result.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet when diagnosing a home connection.
- Disable a VPN temporarily only if your policy allows it; then test both ways.
- Use Lite mode on cellular data. Deep mode is best for fast fixed connections.
Interpreting the ratings
Streaming ratings use approximate bandwidth tiers, while video-call and gaming ratings also weigh latency and jitter. These are practical estimates, not guarantees: service compression, distance to a game server, household usage, and provider routing can all change real-world performance.
Does the test reveal my files or browsing?
No files or form content are used. The tool transfers generated test bytes to Cloudflare's speed endpoints. Cloudflare receives the network request as it would for any site using its service.
Why is Wi-Fi slower than my internet plan?
Your plan describes the provider link, while Wi-Fi adds distance, walls, radio interference, channel congestion, and device limitations. Test near the router and compare with Ethernet.
What is good latency?
Under 30 ms is excellent for interactive use, 30–60 ms is generally good, and higher latency becomes increasingly noticeable. Consistent latency is often more important than one unusually low reading.
