Find the hostname behind an IP
A reverse DNS lookup goes the other way from a normal one: given an IP address, it finds the hostname (the PTR record) registered for it. That's useful for identifying a server in a log, checking mail-server configuration, or verifying that an address resolves to the name you expect. This tool performs that reverse lookup.
How to use it
- Enter an IP address.
- Read the hostname, if one is registered.
- Use it to identify or verify the address.
Where it helps
- Putting a name to an IP in a server log.
- Checking mail-server reverse records, which affect deliverability.
- Verifying an address maps back to the expected host.
Questions people ask
Why do some IPs return nothing? A reverse record is optional, and many addresses — especially home connections — simply don't have one set.
Is my query stored? The lookup answers your request; the tool doesn't keep it.
