Add or remove sales tax and VAT
Sometimes you have a price before tax and need the total; other times you have a tax-inclusive price and need the amount before tax. These are different sums, and getting them backwards gives the wrong figure. This calculator does both — adding tax to a net price, or extracting the tax already baked into a gross price.
How to use it
- Enter the price.
- Enter the tax rate.
- Choose whether to add tax or remove it, and read the breakdown.
Common uses
- Quoting a customer a tax-inclusive total.
- Finding the net figure from a gross invoice.
- Checking the tax portion of a receipt.
Questions people ask
Why isn't removing tax the same as subtracting the percentage? The tax was added to the smaller net price, so to reverse it you divide by one plus the rate, not subtract the rate from the total.
